With the door fully open, place a 2×4 laid flat on the floor in the center of the opening. Close the door using the wall button or remote. The door should reverse when it touches the wood.
If the door does not reverse, stop using it until the opener is inspected and adjusted properly.
If the garage door does not reverse easily when it meets resistance, the opener force settings may be too high. This can create a safety hazard and should be corrected according to the opener manufacturer’s instructions.
Make sure the photo eye sensors near the bottom of the tracks are clean, aligned, and securely mounted. Misaligned or blocked sensors can prevent the door from closing properly or cause it to reverse unexpectedly.

Look over the garage door springs, cables, rollers, pulleys, hinges, and other hardware for signs of wear, rust, fraying, cracking, or damage. If something looks worn or broken, it should be addressed before it leads to a larger failure.

The door should lift smoothly with little resistance and stay partially open around three to four feet above the floor. If it drops, feels heavy, or is difficult to lift, the garage door springs may be out of balance and should be serviced.
